Svaraveena

Svaraveena

The Svaraveena (or Swara Veena) is a traditional Indian stringed musical instrument commonly used in South Indian classical music education. It has a hollow, polished wooden body in a trapezoidal shape.  A wooden or metal fret or bridge bar is placed over the strings, and sound holes are carved in the center to amplify the sound.

It is widely used as an educational tool to teach basic swaras (notes) to beginners in Carnatic music.  The soothing tones of the instrument make it suitable for music therapy, and it is occasionally used in devotional music settings such as bhajans.
